We all know the phrase \u201cnew year, new me!\u201d which usually involves hitting the gym, chopping off your hair or getting a whole new wardrobe. Rather than spending money on a new you this year, why not make money on changing up your look instead? It may sound crazy, but the solution is simple: Clean out your closets!<\/p>\n

We\u2019re all guilty of buying new clothes or accessories before getting rid of things we no longer need or use, but that inevitably leads to an exorbitant amount of stuff that takes up space and is hard to organize. Cleaning out your closet may seem daunting, but there are a few tips about how to clean and organize your closet for the new year that will result in a fresh closet for the remainder of winter and a whole set of clothes to consign or donate.<\/p>\n

Step 1. Forgot You Had It? Out It Goes!<\/h2>\n

Whether you\u2019re just cleaning out your closet or looking to tackle every closet in your home, it can be a daunting task. So where should you begin? The first cardinal rule for cleaning out your closet:<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t worn it in a year \u2014 or you forgot you even owned it \u2014 you no longer need it.<\/p>\n

Going through your items and recognizing what you use and what you don\u2019t will help you avoid clutter and allow you to recognize the clothing and accessories you purchase but don\u2019t ever use.<\/p>\n

Step 2. Make 3 Piles<\/h2>\n

Not every item needs to be thrown out, and not every item can be consigned. When you sit down to sort through your closet, make three piles to organize your items:<\/p>\n

Items that need to be thrown out, items that can be donated, and items that can be consigned.<\/p>\n

The most important part of this step is to be completely ruthless. Everything that is stained, torn, discolored, or doesn\u2019t fit is not salvageable. Clothing, shoes, and accessories simply don\u2019t last forever, and recognizing when it\u2019s time for them to be thrown out is pivotal to keeping your closets organized.<\/p>\n

Your donation pile is for items that are still in good condition, but are not among the brands that your consignment store will take.<\/p>\n

Last will be your consignment pile. This includes items that are in sellable condition and ready to make you some extra cash!<\/p>\n

Step 3. Go Shopping in Your Own Closet!<\/h2>\n

Once you\u2019ve cleaned out what you are ready to get rid of, it\u2019s a great opportunity to shop in your own wardrobe and find chances to mix up what you already have!
